Animal Models and Microfluidics Tools with a Human Touch

Humanized mouse models that enable more human-relevant research findings play an increasingly important role in drug discovery. In this article in Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News, Dr. Michael Seiler, Taconic Biosciences' vice president, commercial products, discusses the heightened focus on the role of immunology in systems biology and the subsequent need for immunodeficient models that gain facets of the human immune system. Dr. Seiler reviews several such models from Taconic, including a new huNOG-EXL EA (early access) model that offers a longer study window ideal for evaluating slower-growing tumors and a B-cell-deficient Jh syngeneic model on a B6 background, which enables investigators to study biologics without the risk of anti-drug antibody development:

"Given the complexity of modeling the human immune system in vivo, we see an increased requirement for optionality in immunodeficient models. The most notable options include the ability to choose the host mouse as well as the primary human cells that will best contribute meaningfully to the experimental design and objective."
