Taconic Changes Legal Name to Taconic Biosciences

Hudson, NY — September 23, 2014 - Taconic announced today that it has changed the legal name of the company from Taconic Farms, Inc. to Taconic Biosciences, Inc. The change in Taconic’s name reflects the evolution of the firm from primarily a breeder of laboratory mice and rats to a science and technologies-based service company focused on providing genetically engineered models and services to biomedical and biopharmaceutical research worldwide.

Founded in 1952 as Taconic Farms, Inc., the company was primarily focused on the breeding and sale of laboratory mice and rats until the early 2000s. At that time, Taconic began adding a portfolio of services to complement its product offerings. By 2008, the company had diversified into custom model generation, animal health and diagnostics, genetic and molecular analysis, and genetically engineered mouse breeding. Today, the company offers an integrated portfolio of products and services — referred to as “GEMs Management” — that services clients from the initial idea to acquire a specific genetically engineered rodent model, through the actual delivery of cohorts ready for use in studies.*

Samuel P. Phelan, Chairman of the Board at Taconic, comments on the transition of the company from a traditional breeder into a leading biosciences provider: "With all the advances in the understanding of both the human and murine genomes since the completion of the Human Genome Project in 2000, Taconic embarked upon launching a variety of new genetically-based products and services. We have pioneered the commercialization of transgenic models and now are providing even more relevant precision research models bearing human genes. The time was overdue for a name change and re-branding of Taconic. Taconic Farms no longer fits what we have become — a global biosciences corporation."

Taconic’s rebranding happens amidst the launch of two new important products and services for the company. Chief Executive Officer, Bob Rosenthal, comments on the timing of the renaming and rebranding of the company: "The launch of CRISPR gene editing technology and the NOG Portfolio in 2014 signal a new direction for Taconic and reinforce our positioning as a biosciences company. CRISPR helps us generate custom models much more efficiently than other technologies. This dovetails with the recent launch of the NOG Portfolio, involving the availability of 30 new NOG mice strains in coming years, including the recent launch of several second-generation NOGs. Such models are leading the way in immunology, oncology, infectious disease, and other types of biomedical and biopharmaceutical research. Our goal as Taconic Biosciences will be to help scientists acquire and apply Taconic’s advanced NOG Portfolio, such as the NOG, in their research. Taconic Biosciences’ objective is to provide researchers with mouse and rat-based models that better predict the outcomes of research later in human clinical trials."

Concurrent with this announcement, Taconic is launching its new website, corporate identity program, and a variety of changes in the company’s marketing and sales materials. Taconic invites viewers to visit its new website at https://www.taconic.com.
