Streamlining Preclinical Colony Management: Improved Outcomes, Shorter Timelines

In the complex landscape of preclinical research, effective colony management of genetically engineered mouse and rat models is crucial for accelerating scientific advancements and ensuring reliable data. Taconic Biosciences has been an innovator since its founding in New York in 1949. As the first commercial provider to offer colony management services, Taconic has set the benchmark for all other programs to follow. Our team has managed more than 6,000 genetically engineered models, underscoring our unparalleled expertise and commitment to scientific progress.

Delivering the complete solution through integrated, end-to-end services

Our capabilities span the breadth of the genetic engineering “toolbox”, giving us the freedom to take a "top-down" approach in our designs. We focus first on achieving a GEM with the desired phenotype, and from there select the best tool to achieve this objective. At each step, we build in redundancies to mitigate risks inherent to the model generation process. Robust quality control measures ensure integrity and confidence as we progress through each phase of the project.

As the only integrated model design to management offering, we have moved the goalposts. No longer satisfied with the conventional deliverable of a small cohort for breeding, we moved the deliverable to a complete study cohort ready for validation. This seamless transition not only accelerates the process, but ensures no time or knowledge is lost in the transition.

As no two research projects are the same, no two breeding projects carry the same requirements. Taconic works with principal investigators and veterinarians to tailor our approach to the specific needs of each breeding project, at each stage of the project.

The Complete Solution from Taconic

Ensuring the genetic integrity of rodent breeding colonies is essential for a successful preclinical research program. A robust breeding program incorporating best husbandry practices, colony refreshment strategies, and monitoring techniques is essential to prevent strain contamination, genetic drift, and expression changes that could compromise critical studies.

Custom Solutions for Your Research

Central to the success of Taconic’s colony management programs are our PhD-level Scientific Program Managers and dedicated Project Managers. These functions offer strategic insights and operational excellence, ensuring projects are executed seamlessly from inception to completion. This approach not only accelerates timelines but also enhances project outcomes through meticulous planning and agile project management strategies. Every project is documented in a project charter, which includes goals, objectives, health status of the animals, risk assessments, milestones, a comprehensive breeding diagram timeline, cost, and defined meeting and communication plans.

NOG Portfolio

The NOG mouse offers many advantages over standard nude and scid strains, particularly for engraftment of challenging cell lines, patient-derived xenografts, and immune system humanization.

Biospecimens

Genetically Engineered Models (GEMs)

Taconic offers over 4600 genetically engineered models (GEMs) including proprietary transgenic mice, knockout models, and repositories from various entities Live GEMs are immediately available, many under simple licensing terms. Cryopreserved lines can be delivered in 14-16 weeks, and a single purchase price provides cryorecovery, a deliverable of four mutant animals and perpetual use rights.

Animal Models

Humanized Immune System Mice

Humanized immune system (HIS) mice are the most robust and translatable rodent models available for immuno-oncology research. We design these models to recapitulate important aspects of the human immune system, empowering you to more accurately evaluate novel therapeutics.
