Cardiovascular Disease:
Bleeding time is an in vivo assay indicative of platelet and coagulation function. The bleeding time assay determines whether a particular knockout line has any deficiency with respect to platelet function or coagulation. Mice are anesthetized with isoflurane and then 7 mm of their tail is transected completely. The tail is placed into 37°C saline and the time to bleeding cessation is measured. The maximum time allowed is 5 minutes. At that point the tail is cauterized and the mouse is recovered.
