Taconic Biosciences' germ-free mice are an ideal substrate to evaluate the properties of complex or defined gut microbiota following fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT). Axenic (germ-free) mice transplanted with donor microbiota can be utilized to assess the effects of gut bacteria on a wide range of biological systems, including but not limited to, immunity, neurodegenerative diseases, obesity and diabetes.
Using client-provided FMT materials, microbiota are administered by oral gavage to germ-free mice under aseptic conditions at Taconic's Isolator Breeding Solutions facility. Following FMT, the health status of animals is expected to be a Germ-Free background overlayed with organisms from the donor material. During the husbandry period, Taconic will initiate microbiological monitoring practices.
